All About Me
Hi!
My name is Ruth, welcome to my website, have a look around and if you fancy let me know what you think!
Firstly let me tell you a little about myself. I'm originally from Bangor in Northern Ireland but have been an adopted Bristolian for just over 20 years.
My love of photography started when I was around 13. My big brother let me 'look after' his Pentax P30 for him (he never saw it again!), but it wasn't until I was in college studying Art and Design that I really understood how to use the camera properly. Something clicked (pun intended!) and that was it.
After a bit of exploration, I found that what I really loved doing was taking photos of people, the human form, and especially in black and white.
“I see more in black and white – I like the abstraction of it.” – Mary Ellen Mark
After completing a degree in Photography and Digital Imaging in Reading I moved Bristol to start my career in Medical Photography – it was a perfect way to photograph people and practice my craft.
During this time that I started my own business under my maiden name, Blachford, in 2009 it became Ruth Bennett Photography. I not only gained a husband but also a free assistant! Paul helped me in the beginning but now after many years working together we shoot weddings as a team. This gives us the perfect combination of planned & formal with candid & reportage.
I stayed in Medical photography for around seven years, then spent eight more teaching A Level and BTEC photography; I still work in education now but in a more supportive role, allowing me time to work freelance and spend time with my ever-growing boys, Henry and James – who never let me take a nice photo of them!
